Evaluating the Quality of the Evidence

Critical appraisal is:

“...the process of carefully and systematically examining research to judge its trustworthiness, value and relevance in a particular context” Burls, 2009

Two types of assessments must be conducted to evaluate the quality of the evidence:

1. Assessing the methodological quality of each individual study included in the review
2. Rating the quality of evidence from all studies and providing conclusions and recommendations based on this evidence
