Citing Archival Material

Notes from the Chicago Manual of Style

The Chicago Manual of Style lists a variety of ways to cite the types of materials that could be found in archives, so if you are unsure of how to cite your material please consult the guide, your professor, or your publisher for guidance. Below is an example of how to cite Manuscript Collections, from the 16th Edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Bibliographic citation

    If multiple items from a single fonds are used:

    If only one item from a fonds is used:

White, John M. Letter to Walter Murray. President's Office - W.C. Murray fonds. University of Saskatchewan, University Archives and Special Collections.
