Freedom to Read Week

An annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom.

Freedom to Read Week

Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Intellectual freedom is one of the University Library's core principles and values, as listed in our Strategic Framework. We are committed to upholding this principle.

In 2024, Freedom to Read Week is held February 18-24. The University Library will be setting up displays across our various locations on campus that highlight books from our collections that have been challenged.

In 2021, while the library's physical spaces were closed, we went virtual and created this guide! Explore the pages of this guide to find links to challenged books, throwback photos of displays we've had in the past, and additional online resources. You can even follow along on our social media accounts as we post throughout Freedom to Read Week. Find what other people, libraries, and organizations are doing by searching for the hashtags #FTRWeek and #FreedomtoRead on social media.
