Library and Canvas Integration

This guide is to help navigate and utilize all the library resources available to faculty and instructors in Canvas.

Adding Research Guides to a Course in Canvas

Library Research Guides may be directly embedded into your Canvas course. Keep scrolling or click on the links to go directly to the instructions:

How to Add a Library Research Guide to a Module in Canvas

  1. Open any existing Module. Click on the plus sign to add items to the module.
     
  2. From the Add dropdown menu, select External Tool. A list of available tools will be presented, select Research Guides.
     
  3. A pop-up will appear with Research Guides (libguides.usask.ca) selected by default. You can change this to SHIRP (shirp.usask.ca) by clicking into the Libguides Site dropdown and selecting it if the guide you want is part of SHIRP.
     
  4. Under the Content Type dropdown, you can choose what portion of a libguide you wish to embed: full guide, a single page, or a certain content box. 

     
  5. Next, select the specific research guide you want to embed in your course. The Guide dropdown provides a list of all available research guides. Use the top search box to type a keyword to help narrow your search.
     
  6. Once you have selected the guide of your choice, click on the blue Embed Content button. If you want, you can select a specific page from the research guide to be the landing page by using the Guide Page dropdown.
     
  7. Finally, click on the green Add Item button to complete adding the research guide. Note the URL present, this indicates you are adding a research guide. 

How to Add a Library Research Guide in the Rich Text Editor in Canvas

Canvas has a Rich Content Editor used in features such as Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Quizzes, or Syllabus. The Rich Content Editor supports embedding any Library created research guides.

How to Add a Library Research Guide to the Rich Content Editor in Canvas

The Rich Content Editor looks and functions the same whether is it being used in Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Quizzes, or Syllabus. The instructions below use Pages to demonstrate how to add Library Research Guides to the Rich Content Editor.

  1. Go to the feature where you want to add the Rich Content Editor. In this example, it is the Pages feature (1). Click on the plus sign to add content (2). 
     
  2. A new Page is created, including the Rich Content Editor box. Give the Page a name, then click on the "plug in" icon in the Rich Content Editor box menu. Select View All > Research Guides.

     
  3. Research Guides (libguides.usask.ca) will be selected by default.You can click into the LibGuides Site dropdown and change the selection to SHIRP (shirp.usask.ca) if the guide you want is part of SHIRP.
     
  4. Under the Content Type dropdown, you can choose what portion of a libguide you wish to embed: full guide, a single page, or a certain content box.

     
  5. Once you have selected the guide of your choice, click on the blue Embed Content button.
     
  6. The Library Research Guide will display within the Rich Content Editor. Select any of the Options below the Rich Content Editor box, then click on Save & Publish or Save.
