EndNote X7: Editing & Creating References

Creating a Reference

If for some reason you are unable to export a reference from a database, or you do not have access to electronic records, it is possible to add references to EndNote manually.

  1. You can create a new reference either by pressing CTRL + N, selecting New Reference from the menu bar, or using the menu to select Reference -> New Reference.
  2. A new window opens with all blank fields to be filled in. First of all, select the reference type from the dropdown menu.
  3. Fill in as many of the fields as you can. For journal articles, it's necessary to include the following:
    • Author
    • Year
    • Title
    • Journal Title
    • Volume
    • Issue
    • Start page
  4. When done, close the window (be sure to click the smaller X in the top right of the window, not EndNote itself!) Your changes will automatically save.

Editing Existing References

Editing a reference may be required if incorrect data was imported, or if you want to add more data or custom notes to your references.

  1. Double click on the reference you want to update.
  2. A new window will open up that allows you to edit any field you wish.
  3. Make the changes you desire. If you want to add custom notes to the reference, consider using the Notes or Research Notes fieldsYou can also add your own keywords if desired.
  4. Close the window (ensure you click the smaller X in the top right of the window, not EndNote itself!) Your changes will automatically save.
