Said to be the first Russian nested doll set, the matryoshka doll pictured dates from 1890 and was carved by Vasily Zvyozdochkin, and designed and painted by Sergey Malyutin who was a folk crafts painter in the Abramtsevo estate of Savva Mamontov.  In 1900 Savva Mamontov's wife presented the dolls at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, where the set earned a bronze medal.
