Research Guide for Library Faculty: Internal Grants

University of Saskatchewan Internal Funding Opportunities

Faculty Recruitment and Retention Program
Deadline: within 12 months of faculty appointment

This program provides start-up funds to all newly tenured, tenure-track and continuing status faculty to help establish a research program at the University. Library guidelines for applying can be found here (link goes to Library intranet pdf).


SSHRC Explore
Deadlines: late March -- varies by year; watch for announcements

Up to $7,000 over 24 months.
• Supports small scale research projects within scope of SSHRC’s Insight program.
• Fosters research-based knowledge creation in the social sciences and humanities.
• Helps position recipients for success at the national level.
• Researchers can hold only one SSHRC Explore grant at a time.

A number of successful applications from the previous President's SSHRC program are also available for you to consult. While not precisely analagous to the SSHRC Explore and SSHRC Exchange grants, the scope and requirements of the applications are similar. SSHRC Exchange
Deadlines: late March -- varies by year; watch for announcements

Up to $5,000 over 24 months.

• Supports knowledge exchange or mobilization activities within scope of SSHRC’s Connection or Knowledge Synthesis programs.
• Supports the flow and exchange of social science and humanities knowledge.
• Priority is given to activities involving Indigenous communities.
• Researchers can hold both Explore and Exchange grants.


Publications Fund
Deadline: varies by year -- watch for announcements

The Publications Fund provides funding (up to $5000) to support manuscript preparation, publishing subventions, and learned journal subsides.


Conference Fund
Deadlines: January 1, May 1, & September 1

The Conference fund provides financial assistance (up to $5000) to host events held at the University of Saskatchewan.



K–12 School Outrearch Initiatives
Deadline: June 1

K–12 School Outreach Initiatives will support initiatives designed to inform and inspire school students to pursue a university education (up to $8,000 is available, which can be awarded fully or divided between different projects).


Research Junction

Deadline: varies by year

Funding is available through Research Junction (a joint initiative between the City of Saskatoon and the University of Saskatchewan) to support collaborative community-based research partnerships between the City and the university. In 2019, $100,000 to support five to seven projects was available. Specially-identified topics (e.g. homelessness in the 2019 competition) may also have funding dedicated to those research areas.

Undergraduate Student Research Assistantships

USRAs are matching awards provided to faculty researchers interested in hiring undergrad students as research assistants. Assistantships are for full-time work (minimum of 30 hrs/wk) between May and August for either two or four months.
