[2024] Academic Integrity Tutorial: Summary

Summary

Upon completion of this module, you should appreciate the vital role universities play in certifying learning and the importance of academic integrity in this process. While academic misconduct may sometimes be unintentional, students can still be held responsible and must ensure they understand and adhere to the university's guidelines and the expectations of their instructors. To uphold their part of the academic community's social contract, students are ultimately responsible for understanding the expectations and seeking clarification when needed. Specific procedures have been established for both instructors and students to follow.

At the University of Saskatchewan, the Regulations on Student Academic Misconduct (2022) outlines

  • the rules governing academic conduct and misconduct,
  • the procedures in place to deal with misconduct, and
  • the penalties associated with acts of academic misconduct.

Remember that instructors have the authority to investigate suspicions of misconduct but must follow established procedures. Instructors can ask about your process for completing assessments and discuss alleged infringements informally. They cannot automatically dock marks or force resubmission without a mutual agreement. They can, however, request a formal hearing if an agreement cannot be reached or if the alleged misconduct is serious in nature. Lastly, be aware that informal resolutions are recorded and kept by the college for a designated period of time, usually five years or until the student has completed their program.

While it is your responsibility to be familiar with the regulations concerning academic conduct, it is equally important to know your rights and where to seek assistance if you are faced with an allegation. The USSU’s Academic Advocacy Office is available to provide general information and guidance to undergraduate students regarding their rights and responsibilities in both formal and informal procedures. Likewise, the GSA Executive Committee members are well-informed about these regulations and can offer support to graduate students when needed.
