Getting Started in Grad School: 5.8 Summary

Summary

You are about to undertake an exciting journey here at USask. The first few days, weeks, and even months of your new program will present an array of new experiences. At times these experiences will be exciting; other times they might be overwhelming. These experiences may even contribute to feelings of culture shock. However, recognizing that such feelings are common can help you maintain perspective as you become more familiar with your new environment. The purpose of this module was to introduce you to some of the norms of studying at a Canadian university, as well as help you anticipate some of the communication and cultural norms present in Canada.

We encourage you to continue to reflect on your experiences as you adjust to a new teaching and learning environment. This process will take time and is not something that you have to navigate alone. By asking questions, self-educating, and connecting with others, you will start to understand the cultural norms and expectations that are embedded into Canadian graduate school culture that at first may perplexing to a newcomer.
