Getting Started in Grad School: 6.3 Why Seek Out Opportunities?

Why Seek Out Opportunities?

Your graduate studies will keep you busy, regardless of level of study or whether you are enrolled in a course- or thesis-based program. You may also have to balance studies with a full- or part-time job or have caring responsibilities that leave you with limited free time. However, there are many benefits to getting involved in opportunities outside the classroom, lab, or library.

Take a few minutes to watch the short video below. Although directed to undergraduates, Professor Dan Fleisch's advice is useful for graduate students as well.

What will you explore during your studies? How will you avoid getting stuck in a rut?

To get the most out of graduate school, think beyond coursework or research. Getting involved in activities outside your immediate area of study can have a profound effect. Such positives may include developing transferable skills, networking and making academic and professional connectionsfinding community and developing friendshipsmaintaining wellbeing and avoiding burnout, or contributing to academic success.

Remember, you do not need to do everything at once. Sometimes your academic or research workload will be very heavy. But finding time to explore new interests, develop new skills, or make new social connections can make your graduate experience that much more meaningful, memorable, and fun!
